When is foam worth discussing?
Void filling may be considered when an assessment identifies lost soil behind a wall that can remain in service. Ask the designer to explain where the material will go and how the escape path will be addressed. A tidy lawn surface alone does not prove the wall is supported.
What can injection leave unresolved?
- A leaning panel or failed anchor needs a structural explanation.
- An open joint can keep losing soil if it is not addressed.
- A blocked or poorly planned drainage path can keep loading the wall.
- An underwater opening may need investigation before material is injected.
What should the proposal explain?
Request the product data, intended injection locations, monitoring method, containment measures and cleanup plan. Have the contractor identify how utilities and existing drains will be protected. Ask what observation would cause work to stop and the design to change.
- Retained soil
- Documented void, if confirmed
- Existing wall
- Canal water
The dashed arrow represents a possible soil-loss path that requires diagnosis. Preserve the drainage route specified by the designer. Conceptual section only: the cause, extent and suitable treatment must be established on site. Filling a void does not itself verify the wall’s structural condition.
Does a small injection job bypass review?
Give the permit office the complete method and work limits. Flagler County specifically excludes structural work from its small-job permit exemption. Environmental review is a separate question when work may affect water or submerged land.
Compare the complete repair
Price the assessment, loss-path repair, fill material, drainage and follow-up as separate scope items. A low injection price is hard to compare if those items are absent.

Three questions that make an injection quote useful
- What is the evidence of a void?
Ask how the affected area was identified and what remains uncertain about its size. Request an explanation of how the work quantity will be measured. Do not compare one fixed price with another proposal that leaves the injected quantity open-ended.
- What keeps the loss from recurring?
Have the proposal name the joint, drain, erosion path or other condition to be addressed alongside filling. If the cause is still uncertain, ask what investigation comes first and how that affects the price.
- How is completion checked?
Agree on the observations, installation records and follow-up that will be provided. Ask who evaluates remaining settlement or movement and whether a return visit is included. Keep product claims separate from the warranty written for this installation.
When to pause the injection decision
Movement still unexplained
If the wall is moving or a support is damaged, ask for a structural review before treating void filling as the whole repair. A proposal should explain how the retained wall will remain supported.
Scope still uncertain
If the quote does not explain material quantities, containment or the loss path, request a revised scope. The repair comparison guide helps organize alternatives.
