Does the license match the business on the quote?
DBPR advises verifying the individual license and the business it qualifies. Record the exact legal business name, qualifier and current status. A familiar trading name or permit-history appearance is not enough.
Does the license cover this marine work?
Florida lists multiple marine-related categories. Have the permit office confirm the category for the complete scope, including wall, dock, pile or utility work. Ask which parts will be subcontracted and who is responsible for them.
What proof of insurance should you request?
- A current certificate matching the contracting business.
- Coverage for the actual work and location.
- Confirmation of water-based or navigable-water work where relevant.
- A way to verify the document with the insurance agent.
The county’s marine packet includes a Longshore and Harbor Notice. Give that requirement to the contractor and insurance professional rather than assuming ordinary paperwork resolves it.
What should remain in writing?
Keep the design, quantities, inclusions, payment terms, change-order process and warranty with the signed proposal. Ask who obtains each approval and supplies the final records. Never rely on a verbal promise that contradicts the written exclusions.

Run the checks in a repeatable order
- Match the names
Copy the legal contracting name and license number from the proposal. Compare them with the current DBPR record and qualified business. Resolve spelling differences or a different entity before relying on the result.
- Match the scope
List wall, dock, pile, electrical and other work separately. Ask the permit office whether the proposed license category and subcontractor arrangement cover that scope. A number printed on a truck is only the starting point.
- Confirm the insurance
Send the actual project description to the insurance contact shown on the documentation. Ask about the work and location rather than treating a certificate as a promise that every exposure is covered.
- Save the evidence
Keep dated verification results, the proposal and subsequent changes in one folder. Repeat the relevant checks if the contracting business, qualifier, insurer or scope changes.

Pause when the paperwork does not line up
A mismatch needs an answerIf the proposal, license, insurance or payment instructions name different businesses, ask for a written explanation and verification. If a permit is said to be unnecessary, request the office’s determination for the actual scope. Do not substitute testimonials for these checks.
